The Effects Of Drug And Alcohol On Nervous Tissue

During my time at Saint Anthony’s Medical Center I have had the pleasure of working with hundreds of different people all different sizes, shapes, ages, and ethnicities. Most of the time these people are normal competent individuals that make good decisions for the most part and they just had a small issue with their health that can be resolved. However, unfortunately there are people out there who have not made the best choices in life and have succumbed a drug or alcohol addiction. Many of these people are in their 20’s and 30’s and show very few signs of stopping, on the other hand there, are the ones who have survived their addiction longer than expected and continue their addictive vices until they reach their 50’s, 60’s, and even into their 70’s. These older addicts tend to mumble and have a hard time answering questions, some of them can barely form sentences when they are completely sober. There are many research articles that have th e general consensus that drug and alcohol cause nervous tissue to deteriorate. What I want to know is if drug/alcohol abusers in their 20’s and 30’s manage to recover from their addiction early and abstain from relapsing, will they suffer any accelerated cognitive deficits later on in life?
